ReplyDeleteI found it really interesting that you pointed out the transformation of Janie's decision making in, Their Eyes Were Watching God. I never considered the difference in time and thought processes of Janie when running away with Jody vs. running away with Tea cake. You did an especially good job in keeping the discussion flowing and transitioning from idea to idea. Also you clearly spent a long time on the synthesis of your sources as you were able to incorporate them easily and knowledgeably to the topics of the discussion. I loved the complexity in the idea of breaking chains creating chains in Janie's life. Great Job!

ReplyDeleteI thought you did a really good job of making your Spoken Dish video symbolic of your food memoir as well as making it a very nice tribute to your grandmother! The bright colors and the loopy font on your poster also nicely enforced the overall positive theme of your memoir. Furthermore, I thought you did a good job in the fishbowl discussion, oftentimes leading conversation. In particular, you made a good point about the origin of power and the consequences of sacrifice. To improve moving on, I feel as if you could synthesize more sources besides TEWWG as well as focus more on the topic at hand as I felt that conversation strayed from the topic at times.
ReplyDeleteI would just like to start off with how delicious your dish was. From the very first bite you could tell that it went very well with your theme of childhood. It was a very sweet and simple dish but thanks to your spoken dish video it was very easy to see why this dish was so special to you. Also it was a very nice way to remember your grandmother and I'm sure she would be very proud. Your poster was also very well done and the bright colors you used and the exaggerated loopy text perfectly represented the perspective of a child about to enjoy his favorite dish. My favorite comment by you in the discussion was you definition of freedom. Something along the lines that true freedom is free of culture. I loved this because I felt that it was an accurate description of an ideal that we don't see fulfilled often enough in a cultural context and that you effectively reminded us why we consider this an ideal. It also put into perspective how significant Janie's growth as a character was. Lastly, great job on this discussion. You could've used more outside sources but being honest it wasn't noticeable or detrimental to the discussion that you didn't in my opinion.
ReplyDeleteHi Austin! I think you had a very beautifully designed poster with the use of font and color. I think you really showed what Hagelslag meant to you. I think you did a good job during the Fishbowl considering you guys had way less time than anticipated. I liked how you talked a lot and had very interesting analysis of Their Eyes Were Watching God. The part about freedom being free from culture was quite interesting, I had never considered that culture itself might be a constricting factor on a person. I think you can improve on citing more outside sources. You were the only one to bring up a poem, but I think you could have demonstrated better synthesis with more outside connections. Also, your discussion could have benefited from more questions. It's good that the group can take a topic and run with it, but it may be better to switch gears every now and then. Overall, a good job in strict time constraints.
ReplyDeleteHi Austin! To start off, I really enjoyed your food memoir and poster! I loved the colors and fonts you used, as it was very visually appealing to look at. As for your food memoir, I loved how you included the pictures of you and your grandma to make it more personal and how you included the music in the background since the group was special to your grandma. During the Fishbowl Discussion, you did an awesome job leading discussions and posing questions as well as replying to those asked by your group members. I could also tell you put a tremendous amount of effort into your synthesis as you had many quotes and ideas ready for the discussion, as well as your comparison to poetry. I really liked the statement you made about breaking chains as one of your 3X3's and I thought it was a great representation of the complexity in the novel. Great job!!!
